ON A ROLL: The 7 Best Lobster Rolls in the Palm Beaches
Speak with any chef or restaurant owner about lobster rolls, and you will find endless variations of the famous lobster-bun combo. On a search to find the classic recipe, you’ll find a range of ingredients from lemon, celery, dill, Dijon mustard to shallot, rice wine, capers and chives. And unanswered questions still remain, such as: to mayonnaise or not to mayonnaise, classic hot dog bun or other, and to serve hot or cold.
After searching for the best twist off the lobster roll recipe, we settled on the top seven rolls from restaurants in the area that stand out when it comes to preparing this New England classic.
1. Chowder Heads (2123 S. U.S. Highway 1, Jupiter) serves its “Signature New England Rolls” at market price on traditional New England hot dog rolls grilled in salt-free butter with Hellmann’s mayonnaise. The dish comes with one side – choose from coleslaw, crab fries, sweet potato fries and Kathy’s potato salad. They serve eight other seafood rolls, as well. 2. Seafood market and restaurant Cod & Capers Seafood (1201 U.S. Highway 1, North Palm Beach) prepares its lobster roll with freshly steamed, hand-picked Maine Lobster meat tossed in light lemon-mayo dressing and served in a New England split-top roll for $22; 561.622.0994; Mon.-Tues., 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wed.-Sat., 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
3. Family-owned Nick & Johnnie’s (207 Royal Poinciana Way, West Palm Beach) puts a South Florida twist on the lobster roll with avocado, celery, lemony mayo and challah. 4. Lobsters fresh from New Bedford, Massachusetts, Lola’s Seafood Eatery (4595 Northlake Blvd., Palm Beach Gardens) creates a New England experience with its signature roll served alongside bottleneck fries, creamy slaw or Lola’s salad for $18. 5. Spoto’s Oyster Bar (4560 PGA Blvd., Palm Beach Gardens) may be named after its oysters, but the restaurant has been frequently recognized for its rendition of the lobster roll. The New England-style dish is served using fresh market lobster for $12.50.
