The Palm Beach area is full of fine hotels for a luxurious escape, and one more now stands out among the rest with a AAA Four Diamond Award.

The American Automobile Association last week released its annual list of Four Diamond Hotels for 2016. The Colony Palm Beach has re-joined the ranks of U.S. hotels on the esteemed list, which also includes area favorites such as The Brazilian Court.

Perhaps contributing to its inclusion, The Colony Palm Beach recently wrapped its $14-million property-wide renovation, which encompassed upgrades to the Pavilion ballroom, penthouses, villas, lobby, restaurant and more

To determine these ratings, the motor club and travel planning organization sends unannounced inspectors to evaluate hotels and others places of lodging on factors including cleanliness, comfort, security and safety. The Four Diamond Award is the second-highest rating an establishment can receive.

"The fundamental hallmarks at this level include an extensive array of amenities combined with a high degree of hospitality, service, and attention to detail," according to AAA's website.

While there are a total of 1,587 Four Diamond hotels nationwide, only 0.4 percent of the 28,000 AAA-approved hotels earn a Five Diamond rating. Palm Beach County has three: Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa, Four Seasons Palm Beach and The Breakers, all of which have retained the status for 2016.
