This Palm Beach Resident Is The Richest Person In Florida, According To Forbes
Yes, the richest man in Florida calls Palm Beach home.
Forbes recently released a list of the wealthiest person in each state, and Interactive Brokers Group CEO Thomas Peterffy topped the list for the Sunshine State, with a net worth of $13.1 billion.
A pioneer in digital stock trading, Peterffy recently moved to Palm Beach from Greenwich, Connecticut. However, this self-made billionaire didn't always live the high life.
As Forbes notes:
Peterffy arrived in America in 1965 as the penniless descendant of Hungarian aristocrats who'd lost nearly all to the Soviets. He got into electronic trading decades before the exchanges digitized, making his Timber Hill into one of the world's largest market makers. When faster traders emerged in the 2000s and began to torpedo Timber Hill, he pivoted into the brokerage business.
Peterffy has been listed as the 88th wealthiest person in the world and the 36th wealthiest in the country.
And he's in pretty good company.
Other American billionaires on Forbes' latest list include Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who—with a net worth of $51.6 billion—was for the first time listed as the richest person in California. Bill Gates, with a net worth of $76 billion, earned the title of the wealthiest in Washington.
To compile the data, Forbes updates the constantly changing net worths of billionaires who have been previously featured on the publication's World's Billionaire List and the Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans. The figures used in the story were from May 6, 2016.
