Publisher's Letter: Food For Thought

As our world rapidly changes (and we get older), we hearken to go back to a simpler time, when the only things we held in our hands at dinner were our utensils. Nowadays, our smartphones aren’t even held in our hands—they’re attached to our arms (Apple Watch, anyone?). While I admit, I love my numerous electronics and the many conveniences they offer, there’s a time to put them away, especially at the dinner table while enjoying a meal and connecting with the ones seated across from you.

Meals are for connecting, communing and celebrating with others. Food relates us to one another, to our unique pasts, our ancestors and our cultural differences and similarities. It’s a way of preserving traditions, practicing rituals and passing our culture down from generation to generation. Since South Florida is a melting pot of ethnicities, there’s no need to fly abroad to tantalize your taste buds with global influences. Some of the best international cuisines can be found right here in our backyard. In our “Culinary Tour de World,” we immerse you in different cultures through 10 eateries in the Palm Beaches, as local chefs introduce you to new flavors, recipes and traditions.

One time-honored tradition that’s doesn’t seem to be showing signs of extinction is tea time. Just as shrimp is the fruit of the sea, tea is the elixir of life. Like Bubba Gump’s shrimp, there are endless ways to enjoy it: You can have green tea, matcha, oolong, kombucha, cheese tea, bubble tea, tea facials, tea body treatments, tea cocktails and tea ice cream, just to name a few. The whole farm-to-table social movement brought to light the importance of organic, locally sourced products and knowing where your food is coming from. Free of pesticides and full of flavor, organic foods are preferred, but not always necessary. As our article “Is It Really Organic?” uncovers, you will learn that delicious and healthy meals don’t have to be all organic. However, if you are strict about eating organic, you better be prepared to ask a lot of questions!
